Residual Functional Capacity (RFC)

March 19, 2020

Social Security will send you a form called a Function Report, after you file your Application for disability benefits. In this form you explain what you can do, what you have trouble doing and lastly what you can't do anymore. After assessing your answers, Social Security will determine what's called your Residual Functional Capacity or RFC.

Despite having an impairment, an RFC won't limit you and it may, in some instances, mean that you can still work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. You are not able to ask your doctor or hospital to fill this form out. You may have help when completing this form.

Your own explanations of your impairments are known as symptoms. Examples of what Social Security wants to know are what things such as what you could do in the past, that you can't do now. It is most important that you answer each question in detail as possible. This form is Social Security's way of getting your limitations directly from you.
