Additional Guidance on Covid-19 SSI Payments

April 13, 2020

As of Friday, April 10th, there is new guidance per the Social Security Commissioner on payments for Social Security Income (SSI).

There is a new tool on the web to expedite your registration for a stimulus check if you don't file taxes. Of special interest if you have dependents under 17 years old, is to register, because you also receive $500 for each dependent. You should do this as soon as possible.

Social Security is asking those who have not filed taxes in 2019 or 2018 and have dependents under 17 years old, to go to the IRS webpage and apply, instead of waiting for the $1200 stimulus check. In this way, you are ensuring receipt of the extra $500 per qualifying child as well. If you want to read more about what exactly those who receive SSI benefits are eligible for, you can visit the IRS page on Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info.

If you received a 1099 for 2019, and you receive Social Security retirement benefits, survivor benefits or disability benefits, and you don't have a child under 17 years old, then your $1200 payment is going to be automatic.

This also applies for those who receive SSI who do not have children under 17 years old. Your payment is automatic as well. For those on SSI, your payment is not considered income and is excluded from resources counted for 12 months.
